Beach Horse Ride

Gallop across the sand with the Atlantic beside you — our most requested experience

Duration: 1h30 – 2h

Level: All levels

Season: All year round (adapted during the summer bathing season)

Group: max. 8 riders

Some moments stay with you forever — and galloping across wet sand, with the sound of the waves and the Serra d’Arga on the horizon, is one of them.

Our beach ride sets off from Areosa, following country lanes and green fields all the way down to the shore. There, the world slows: your horse falls into step with the tide, the breeze carries salt and rosemary, and Viana do Castelo shows why it remains one of the best-kept secrets on the Portuguese coast.

How it works

We welcome you to our equestrian centre with a glass of cold water and a chat: we want to hear about your riding experience so we can match you with the right horse. Once your helmet and stirrups are adjusted, there is a short introduction in the arena — reins, position, how to stop — and off we go.

Groups are always small (maximum 8 riders) and led by certified instructors. If you fancy a trot or a gallop, you can; if you would rather keep to a gentle walk, that is fine too. The ride is yours.

What you will see

  • Areosa’s farm lanes winding between maize fields and vineyards
  • The wild beach north of Viana, often with no one else in sight
  • Views of Monte de Santa Luzia and, on clear days, the Serra d’Arga

Back at the stables, a snack of regional produce awaits — along with your photo of the day, on us.

Frequently asked questions

I've never ridden a horse. Can I take part?

Yes! Most of our visitors ride for the very first time with us. We start with a short introduction in the arena, choose a calm horse suited to you, and keep a comfortable pace throughout, with an instructor always close by.

Can you ride on the beach all year round?

Outside the bathing season (October to April), yes. In summer, the law restricts access to lifeguarded beaches, so we adapt the route to wild beaches and ride in the early morning or late afternoon.

What is the minimum age?

From 8 years old on the standard ride (accompanied by an adult). For younger children we offer short arena rides and first-time taster sessions on horseback.

What if it rains?

Light rain won't stop the ride — it's part of the charm of the Minho! In the event of a storm, we reschedule at no extra cost.
