From the top of the Montedor trails, the Minho region unfolds beneath you: the lighthouse far below, the centuries-old windmills, the patchwork of fields and, in the distance, the blue silhouette of the Serra d’Arga.
This is the favourite ride of anyone who comes for scenery — and stories. The paths we follow were for centuries the tracks of millers and shepherds, and even today we pass grazing flocks, granite walls and, with a little luck, wild garranos: the small native horses that have roamed free on these slopes since before the Romans.
We set off from the equestrian centre in Areosa and head for the hills. The climb is gentle, and the horses — raised on these very trails — make their way up with a sure-footedness that impresses even seasoned city riders. At the highest point we stop for photographs, with the sea on one side and the mountains on the other.
The return follows pine-forest paths, the scent of resin and eucalyptus keeping you company all the way down.
Not at all. Our horses know these paths by heart and the pace is always adapted to the group. There are gentle climbs and descents — nothing technical.
On the higher trails it's common to spot garranos — the wild ponies of north-west Portugal — but they are free-roaming animals, so we can't make promises. Sightings happen on most spring and summer rides.
Closed shoes with a small heel (boots or sturdy trainers). Avoid sandals and completely smooth soles.
